Neighbour decides to remove all their bayam pasir (Amaranth spp) much to our glee. I’m aware of their agriculture practice without use of chemicals, so I brought them over.
The leaves are fed to chickens, seeds (loads of ’em) recovered to be sown in our pasture fields, the stalks cut to size and planted. Nothing goes to waste.
Amaranth is primarily seeded at the fields – where the chickens free range – to soak up excess nitrates. They are an excellent source of vitamin K (for blood clotting) and have about 18% protein. Best thing is, we can eat them too as they taste great! They are extremely low maintenance and grow easily; they thrive all the more in the nutrient rich feeding grounds of the chickens.
