Killing Wild Bananas By “Suffocation”

Previously, I tried killing wild banana plants by manually removing the corms from underground. It’s effective but proven to be an extremely laborious task. I soon realised that even then, sometimes I still miss out a corm or two, and before I know it, new shoots will start sprouting up again. Even though they can be much easily managed by then, it’s just proven to be an indescribable nuisance. These corms can be really extensive underground!

Here, I’m experimenting the extermination of wild bananas by “suffocating” them. There was this one area where a cluster of wild bananas have been growing vigorously for some time now. Because it was a tight cluster, removing the corms would be almost impossible.

So, I’ve tried chopping them off first, placed a tank lid over it, covered with a shade cloth, before weighing it down with two sand bricks. The idea is to block sunlight from reaching the corms, and the weight placed to provide a downward suppression to prevent sprouting. Purely hypothetical. I may be wrong. But let’s see.

If it works, the corms should rot from inside out. I’m already at my wits end. Let’s see how this goes in 3 months time. If it works, the same concept can be applied elsewhere.
